Male Population

  • 54 percent of the male population is married, down from 67 percent in 1970
  • 34 percent of the male population has never been married, up from 28 percent in 1970
  • 9 percent of the male population is divorced, up from 2 percent in 1970

Female Population

  • 51 percent of the female population is married, down from 62 percent in 1970
  • 29 percent of the female population has never been married, up from 22 percent in 1970
  • 11 percent of the female population is divorced, up from 3 percent in 1970

The number of married people has increased with population growth. However, rate of marriage formations has trailed the rate of population growth for both males and females. For various reasons, a larger number of people are foregoing marriage completely.
